Email Phishing & Spoofing: How to Protect Your Business (and Why You Need ESET)

Email is the backbone of business communication — and the #1 attack surface cybercriminals exploit. Every day, South African and international businesses lose money, data, and reputation to phishing, spoofing, and malicious embedded links. The good news? Most of these attacks are preventable with the right knowledge and the right tools.

What Is Email Phishing?

Phishing is a social engineering attack where criminals send emails that look legitimate — often impersonating your bank, your suppliers, your CEO, or well-known brands — to trick you into revealing passwords, banking details, or sensitive information. The email usually contains a sense of urgency: “Your account has been compromised!” or “Payment overdue — click to confirm.”

What Is Email Spoofing?

Spoofing is when an attacker forges the “From” address so the email appears to come from someone you trust — your colleague, your accountant, or your service provider. The sender’s name and even the domain can be made to look convincing. Spoofed emails are often used for Business Email Compromise (BEC) — a scam that cost businesses worldwide billions in 2024 and 2025.

The Danger of Embedded Links

Embedded links are the payload. A link may display as https://www.yourbank.co.za/login but actually direct you to a lookalike site hosted by criminals. Once there, you may unknowingly enter your credentials — handing them straight to the attacker. Some links don’t even need a click: simply opening a malicious attachment or a tracking pixel can trigger an infection.

How to Protect Yourself — The Essentials

  1. Hover before you click. Hover over any link to preview the real destination URL. If it doesn’t match the sender’s domain — don’t click.
  2. Check the sender address, not just the name. Criminals spoof display names. Verify the full email address and domain.
  3. Beware of urgency and fear tactics. “Act now,” “Your account is suspended,” “Final notice” — these are pressure tactics designed to bypass your judgment.
  4. Never share passwords or OTPs. No legitimate organisation will ever ask for your password or one-time PIN via email.
  5. Verify requests by phone. If a “director” or “supplier” asks for a payment or a change of banking details by email — call them on a known number to confirm.
  6. Use multi-factor authentication (MFA). Even if your password is stolen, MFA stops the attacker from getting in.
  7. Keep software updated. Outdated software has known vulnerabilities that phishing links and malware love to exploit.

Why a Good Antivirus Matters — ESET

Human vigilance is your first line of defence — but nobody is perfect. A reputable antivirus and internet security suite is your second, always-on line of defence. It catches what the human eye misses: malicious links, drive-by downloads, ransomware, keyloggers, and suspicious attachments — often before they ever execute.

ESET is one of the world’s most trusted names in cybersecurity. Here’s why we recommend it to our clients:

  • Award-winning detection: ESET consistently ranks among the top products in independent AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives evaluations, with a minimal performance impact on your devices.
  • Anti-phishing protection: ESET blocks known phishing and fraud websites in real time — before you can even land on them.
  • Email security: Scans incoming and outgoing mail, including attachments, for malware and dangerous links.
  • Ransomware shield: Protects your documents and files from being encrypted and held hostage.
  • Lightweight: ESET runs quietly in the background without slowing down your business devices.
  • Home & business solutions: From single PCs to full business networks, ESET scales to your needs — including ESET PROTECT for centralised management.
